forest bathing options
Forest bathing is the act of immersing oneself in the forest (or around trees). Developed in the early 1980s by the Japanese, it was originally a solution to the health epidemic that their government had seen as a result of urbanization. After researching the health benefits of being in the forest, the government continued to invest time, money, and resources into further research and the development of certified forest bathing forests.
Forest therapy is a variety of forest bathing that integrates embodiment invitations to help participants connect with nature (aka the More Than Human world or the wild world), their body and senses, and each other. Developed by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, forest therapy walks are rooted in reciprocity with the More Than Human World. We must care for it and it will continue to care for us.
Benefits of forest bathing and forest therapy range from physical health benefits like lower blood pressure, decreased inflammation, and improved immune systems to emotional and mental health benefits like lower levels of stress hormones, less anxiety, and an increased sense of belonging and connectedness.

Hanna Foster

My first exposure to forest bathing was in November of 2023 and I ended up going from participant to training to leading my own walks as a guide in just under 12 months. I recognized the difference that this modality could make in the lives of others from a mental & emotional well-being aspect as well as the aspect of physical wellbeing, and I wanted to make it more widely accessible to Hoosiers.

reciprocity with nature
Relational forest therapy invites us to slow down and listen, to recognize that the land offers its wisdom & gifts freely, and to honor this generosity by treading gently, expressing gratitude, and giving back. Reciprocity with nature means embracing our role as part of the ecosystem - rooted, connected, and committed to the well-being of the world that sustains us.

tea ceremony
The practice of closing out our forest bathing walk with a tea ceremony is one of our favorite ways to deepen our relationship with each participant and with the earth. It's a chance to offer something to the land, ground ourselves before returning to our daily lives, and chat with everyone who comes to our events.
